The Downtown Bend Athletic Club, a Chat with Owner Gary Hughes – House Talk Episode 53

Karen Malanga: Hi, this is Karen Malanga with Nest Bend and House Talk. I’m here today at my favorite gym in Bend, Oregon, the Downtown Athletic Club.

I’ve been working out with Gary for like well over 15 years. This is where I come three mornings a week. It’s a fabulous facility.

So Gary, can you tell us a little bit about the Downtown Athletic Club.

Gary: The Downtown Athletic Club is on the corner of Franklin and Bond.

We try to do things a little bit differently here. We care for our members. We want to make sure that they get everything they can out of their workouts. That’s what we try to do.

Karen: Yeah, and you do a great job.

Gary: Thank you.

Karen: I don’t know if you guys can see it, but this is the facility. It’s quiet. It’s peaceful in the mornings. I’m here at like 5:30, right, Gary?

Gary: Right, right.

Karen: It’s a little different now. We’re here at nine in the morning. There’s a few more people.

It’s very convenient to park. And it’s a wonderful spot to work out in.

You know that I’ve always felt so comfortable working out at the Downtown Athletic Club. What creates the ambiance here that makes me and others feel so great?

Gary: Well, one of the things here is that we don’t believe in music booming. We have created an atmosphere in here that is very comforting for our members. Our employees want to help people out. We’re truly compassionate about fitness. And it’s a very nice place for people to come and work out.

Karen: And I’ve always appreciated how clean it is. Gary keeps the equipment maintained perfectly. You never come in and have a machine that you sit on and you go, “Wait a minute! What’s going on here? Something’s wrong.” It’s just not like that here at the Downtown Athletic Club.

Gary: Yeah, we try pretty hard. People come in and they expect things to work! And so we’ve tried to do that from the very beginning, make sure that everything works. We don’t have torn pads, out of order signs for too long. Equipment does break down on occasion, but we try to jump on it and get it fixed as quickly as possible.

Karen: That’s great, Gary! Thank you so much for having us here.

Gary: Yes, thank you!
